Note: Only ACM-BCB 2018 attendees are permitted to use this service. It is your responsibility to contact prospective roommates, conduct appropriate inquiries or screening and make final hotel arrangements. ACM-BCB and its organizers assume no responsibility for your arrangements.

NSF-Sponsored Travel Award

NSF has approved a travel grant to support up to 10 students in US-based institutions with up to $1,000 each to cover travel and registration cost for attending ACM-BCB 2018.

  1. Pre ACM-BCB 2018:
    By 4 P.M. US EDT on Aug. 30, 2018 (Thursday), all US-based institution students who are interested in this travel award, need to submit an application package with two REQUIRED files to be qualified to participate in the NSF-sponsored student forum.
  2. During ACM-BCB 2018
    On Aug. 31 st , 2018 (Friday), there will be a NSF-Sponsored Student Forum in Salon D in ACM-BCB 2018 Conference hotel. Time: 4pm-6pm EDT. Those who have successfully submitted application package on time will get a presentation slot to speak. Based on committee’s voting, 10 top candidates will be notified the selection post the ACM-BCB 2018.
  3. Post ACM-BCB 2018
    To confirm the acceptance of the $1,000 NSF travel award, candidates will need to submit a 1-page summary on what they have learned during the ACM-BCB 2018. Then travel reimbursement will be done through Georgia Tech.
Pre ACM-BCB 2018 Application Package:
All students who are from US-Based institutions are welcomed to submit an application package to acmbcb2018.travel@gmail.com. The email subject line should follow the format: ACMBCB2018 NSF Travel Award Application from FirstName-LastName_InstituteName.
The whole application needs to include one PDF file, and one PPT with distinctive naming convention: FirstName-LastName_InstituteName_File-xx.pdf and FirstName-LastName_InstituteName_File-xx.ppt.
  1. One PDF file (please use the file template provided use .docx file to create the pdf) should include:
    1. An ACMBCB2018-Related Research or Teaching-Education Project Abstract
      1. This abstract should be a 1-page NSF-style summary describing “a research project” or “a teaching-education experience” relating to bioinformatics, or computational biology, or health informatics. Please summarize ‘Intellectual Merit’ and ‘Broad Impact’ as defined by NSF; and
      2. If you have a co-authored paper or poster in ACMBCB, please provide the title.
    2. A Bio-sketch and A Photo (250 Words) as in the template provided.
    3. A Verification of Good Academic Standing in Applicant’s US-Based Institute from the applicant’s advisor/mentor (for graduate students), or department program chair (for high school or undergrad students).
  2. One PPT presentation file (please use the file template provided )should include:
    1. 2-slide to share your abstract summary on an ACMBCB2018-related “research project” OR “teaching-education experience”; and
    2. 1-slide to share why you attend ACMBCB2018.

NSF-Sponsored Student Forum Presentation: 4-6 P.M., US-EDT, August 31st, 2018
NSF Travel Award Selection Notification: September 10th, 2018 (Monday)
Confirmation of Acceptance: September 17th, 2018 (Monday)
Proceeding with Travel Reimbursement: After September 25th, 2018

Visa

We would be happy to send you a visa support letter if you need one to attend ACM-BCB 2018.
These letters must come from ACM, and you can find the information to request your support letter at https://www.acm.org/special-interest-groups/volunteer-resources/conference-manual/visa-support-letters.

The Association for Computing Machinery does not issue formal invitation letters for visas to attend ACM sponsored conferences. We can however issue a visa support letter.
  • ACM is able to provide visa support letters to attendees as well as authors with accepted papers, posters, or members of the conference committee.
  • For visa support letters, refer all requests to supportletters@acm.org.ACM suggests posting this address on the conference web-site. Those requesting a letter should allow 7-10 business days to receive it. All requests are handled in the order they are received. The information below should be included with the request.
For Visa support letters, please send all requests to the Office of SIG Services supportletters@acm.org
  • Name (as it appears on attendee’s passport) and mailing address
  • The name of the conference attendees is registering for
  • Attendee’s registration confirmation number (if available) OR
  • Authors may indicate their paper title. Speakers can provide the title of their talk.
  • Include a fax number or email address of where letter can be sent

ACM does not provide letters for transport of vendor or presenter equipment. ACM suggests shipping the materials insured to the conference facility.
